But Ubuntu is quite good too. It's just works (for me, it is anyhow).
I'm using Linux since 6 years now and I can use any of the distros I quoted, it does not make so much difference to me, once I installed and configured it… so…
Go with whatever works for you
About Gnome Shell, Ubuntu is going towards Unity (which is based on Gnome 3) but it is really simple to switch to Gnome Shell so it's not a choice factor to me.
I don't choose the distro looking at its default environment. It depends on people.
If you want a good Gnome Shell default environment, maybe you should go with Fedora…
